Science says you should bake me a pie woman!

December 30, 2006

Hahaha my girlfriend was not nearly as entertained as I was by this news story. Well, she accepted the news, she just didn’t accept my interpretation of what this means she should’ve been doing at that moment…

Housework cuts breast cancer risk

Clothes Pegs

Chores may be exercise enough

Women who exercise by doing the housework can reduce their risk of breast cancer, a study suggests. The research on more than 200,000 women from nine European countries found doing household chores was far more cancer protective than playing sport.

Dusting, mopping and vacuuming was also better than having a physical job.

The women in the Cancer Research UK-funded study spent an average of 16 to 17 hours a week cooking, cleaning and doing the washing.

Something as simple and cheap as doing the housework can help

Dr Lesley Walker of Cancer Research UK

Experts have long known that physical exercise can reduce the risk of breast cancer, probably through hormonal and metabolic changes.

But it has been less clear how much and what types of exercise are necessary for this risk reduction.

And much of past work has examined the link between exercise and breast cancer in post-menopausal women only.

The latest study looked at both pre- and post-menopausal women and a range of activities, including work, leisure and housework.

All forms of physical activity combined reduced the breast cancer risk in post-menopausal women, but had no obvious effect in pre-menopausal women.

Chores protected

Out of all of the activities, only housework significantly reduced the risk of both pre- and post-menopausal women getting the disease.

Housework cut breast cancer risk by 30% among the pre-menopausal women and 20% among the post-menopausal women.

The women were studied over an average of 6.4 years, during which time there were 3,423 cases of breast cancer.

The international authors said their results suggested that moderate forms of physical activity, such as housework, may be more important than less frequent but more intense recreational physical activity in reducing breast cancer risk.

Dr Lesley Walker of Cancer Research UK said: “We already know that women who keep a healthy weight are less likely to develop breast cancer.

“This study suggests that being physically active may also help reduce the risk and that something as simple and cheap as doing the housework can help.”

He recommend that men and women take regular exercise and maintain a healthy body weight to help prevent cancer.

The research is published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers and Prevention.

Now a man can say that women should be doing chores and housework without being mysoginistic, they are geniunely looking after the health and general wellfare of the their women companions – or something.

Man I am getting in so much trouble for this later, but that’s half the fun!

Santa dies in front of children

December 28, 2006

I don’t know whether to laugh or feel terrible. Maybe a bit of both.

CHILDREN watched in horror as a Santa Claus collapsed and died as he handed out presents at a Christmas party.

Andrew Robertson, 82, took ill as excited youngsters were being given their gifts.

He was taken to a side room, still dressed in a Father Christmas outfit, and attempts were made to revive him.

But when medics arrived, he was pronounced dead.

Mr Robertson, from Dundee, had played Santa for several years at the city’s Broughty Castle Bowling Club’s Christmas party, which is held for the grandchildren of members.

Ian Smart, the bowling club’s secretary, said: “Andy was a father figure in the club who never had a bad word to say about anyone.

“If you asked him to do anything for you, he would always say no problem’.

“One wee kid said ‘how are we going to get our presents next week if Father Christmas is ill?’ – they didn’t understand what had happened.”

Mr Smart said Mr Robertson had played an active role in the bowling club.

“He was well-liked and will be sorely missed,” he said.

His brother Alister said he had complained about feeling hot shortly before he collapsed on Sunday afternoon.

He told The Courier newspaper: “The kids saw him getting taken away as if he was ill.

“They knew something was wrong with Santa Claus as he went away with the two guys, but they didn’t see anything further.

“It has been quite a shock for everybody but my view is that he was there thoroughly enjoying himself when he was struck down.”

Mr Robertson was a former director with a shipbuilding company.

His funeral takes place today.

I can’t imagine how traumatizing this would be for the kids, as silly as the circumstances sound. I bet these kids wouldn’t be the ones on the playground saying “My daddy says Santa isn’t real!” but would instead be the ones saying, “yeah, well I saw Santa die!”

Infant goes through airport X-ray machine.

December 28, 2006

He survived but will probably become radioactive super baby.

LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) — A woman sent her 1-month-old grandson through an X-ray machine at Los Angeles International Airport, security officials said Wednesday.

The woman, who spoke little English and was traveling to Mexico, put the infant in a plastic bin used to hold loose carry-on items for security scanning at the busy airport Saturday morning.

Security screeners saw the baby as it started to pass through, pulled the bin out, and immediately sought medical assistance for the child, Transportation Security Administration spokesman Nico Melendez said.

The baby was examined at a local hospital and judged not to have received a dangerous dose of radiation.

“The lady obviously mistakenly put the baby in the machine. It was an unfortunate incident,” Melendez said. (Watch the reactions of other travelers Video)

Airport officials said it was an innocent mistake by an inexperienced traveler and only the second such incident there since 1988, when a baby in a car seat went through an X-ray scanner.

An honest mistake but an amusing image to have a baby sitting in the plastic bin dimly sucking its thumb as it travels into the x-ray machine. I wonder how the x-ray luggage scan of “inside of baby” would look.

Female Athlete lacks sexual characteristics of a woman

December 28, 2006

Female Athlete fails “gender test.”

(CBS/AP) An Indian runner who won a silver medal in the women’s 800-meter run at the Asian Games earlier this month has failed a gender test and is likely to be stripped of her medal, news reports said Monday.

Santhi Soudarajan, 25, was made to take the gender test in Doha, Qatar after her victory.

The test reports sent to the Indian Olympic Association on Sunday said she “does not possess the sexual characteristics of a woman,” The Times of India reported. The test was administered by a medical commission set up by the games’ organizers.

During an awards ceremony held in her native province Monday, Santhi said, “I do not want to talk about it,” when asked about the failed tests.

There are no compulsory gender tests during events sanctioned by the International Association of Athletics Federation, but athletes can be asked to take a gender test. The medical evaluation panel usually includes a gynecologist, endocrinologist, psychologist, and an internal medicine specialist.

Dr. Manmohan Singh, chairman of the medical commission of the Indian Olympic Association told the Indian Express newspaper that the Olympic Council of Asia had been informed of the results of Soudarajan’s gender test.

It was not unclear whether Santhi, who comes from a poor family, had undergone a sex change procedure in the past, reports The Times of India.

Sports officials in the athlete’s home state of Tamil Nadu said that they have no information on her whereabouts.

“If the reports are true, then it is very sad and extremely disappointing,” her coach, P. Nagarajan, told the Indian Express.

You know, that has to be embarrassing for somebody. Apparently she comes from a poor family and could not have afforded a sex change operation yet she lacks distinguishing sexual characteristics of a woman? Major case of awkwardness for her. What features does she lack anyhow?

Coming on the heels of a revealing story about how Indian men don’t measure up, things are not looking good for Indian sexuality with small penised men and masculine, unfeminine women. :O

Please realize I’m being light here and really have nothing against India or its people (all billion of them). These stories would be equally amusing if they were true of, say,the Irish. Probably more so in many respects.
